Book Review: Your Happy Heart

Hi everyone!

This week, I shared a new book with my class!

My school always has a Word of the Month.
For February, the Word of the Month is friendship!
This book was perfect for talking about friendship.

In this book, Javon is a fifth grade student that has been assigned as a buddy reader to a kindergartener, Richard, which he considers a great honor. Javon reflects on his time in kindergarten and how much he has grown since then.

Javon finds that his kindergarten reading buddy is struggling with many of the same issues that Javon did at that age. Through reflection, support, and friendship, Javon is able to help his kindergarten buddy like so many had helped him before. Through this new friendship, Javon learns that by helping someone else feel good about them self, you can help yourself to feel good too!

I love this book on so many levels! I showed the book to our school counselor as a book that she might want to use in the future. She comes into our classrooms once a month to do whole group lessons, in addition to meeting with students one on one and in small groups. This book discusses ways for students to manage their feelings and how to build self-confidence by thinking of things that make them special.
I had my students engage in an activity from this book. In the story, Javon made a picture of a heart and wrote things inside of it that make him happy. My students did this as well and it was a good reminder of things to think about when they are feeling down.

You can find the freebie for this activity {here}.
You can read more information about the book, Your Happy Heart, {here}.

If you have used this book in your class, feel free to let me know how you used it!
I think it is a book that could be used for many different lessons! :)
