Hey bloggers!
We are approaching the end of the year!...well, kind of. We have 14 more school days (we aren't counting or anything...). But it will be here before we know it!
Here's an update on what we have been doing the last few weeks!
Math:
We finished up our unit on fractions and have moved on to double digit addition & subtraction! We also did a quick review of place value before our double digit stuff. The kids are so excited to be working with bigger numbers! After reviewing places value with ones & tens, we used them to solve our addition problems. It was great for the students to be able to see the groups of tens and ones that they were working with! We are going to be starting double digit addition with carrying next...for that, we will be using unifex cubes first, so that when they have ten (or more) cubes in the ones place, they can physically make them into a new stick of ten cubes. I'm hoping that will help them really understand what it means when they "make a new ten."
Writing:
We finally finished up our fiction unit. I say finally because...well, it wasn't my favorite. It's a lot for the students to grasp and to try to get onto paper. They worked really hard and there were some fun stories that came out of the unit, but I'm excited to move onto poetry!
We started with acrostic poems, then color poems, and then 5 senses poems. The kids are really enjoying it and I am too! Up next, we will do repeated lines poems, shape poems, and couplets!
Reading:
A few weeks ago we did a reader's theater unit. The kids absolutely LOVED it!! We only spent a week on it. The first day I assigned groups, met with each group and helped them highlight their parts, then sent them off to practice reading their scripts and creating their face mask puppets. I recorded each groups play and let them watch them later. They loved performing and watching themselves. The group below practiced so much! They practiced while sitting, then decided to stand, and then decided they wanted to stand in the order that they "appeared" in the play...it was great to see them so into it! I have the scripts posted {here}!
Out next reading unit was a 2 week unite about weather, which we just finished up this week! The kids loved learning about different kinds of weather and recording what they learned. During this unit, we also read & watched Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (it actually worked well that it rained all week so we needed something to do for a few days of indoor recess!). We also made a class book: Cloudy with a Chance of ________. You can find a few of our weather activities {here}!
Now that we have finished our weather unit, we will be starting our human body & nutrition unit!
Have a great week...and don't forget to enter my giveaway for a pencil sharpener from Classroom Friendly Supplies {HERE}!!
